Canal+ Group is the largest Pay TV group in France. It is a leading producer of premium and specialty channels. It is also a major player in the collection and distribution of Pay TV offerings. With its international operations, particularly in Poland, the Group’s portfolio totals 14.3 million subscriptions at the end of 2012.
At the core of of Canal+ Group’s offering, Les Chaînes Canal+ offer five premium-content channels, each with its own editorial line and identity. Their programs are based on exclusivity, innovation, and originality. Canal+ is a premium generalist channel offering a unique programming format with recent films, sports, news, fiction, documentaries and entertainment. Canal+ Group also publishes 21 channels covering the most popular themes: cinema, sports, news, documentaries, lifestyle, series, and youth.
Canal+ Group is a digital pioneer in Europe and in new television practices. It is the first to have initiated a high definition (HD) offer by satellite in France in the spring of 2006; its five HD channels are broadcast on all the enabling platforms. Catch-up television services, allowing its subscribers to view a catalog of programs for a certain period after their initial release, are an important factor in subscriber retention. CanalPlay is a video-on-demand (VoD) service and CanalPlay Infinity, launched in November 2011, is an unlimited subscription VoD offer (SVoD).
With the acquisition of the Direct 8 and Direct Star channels, a transaction announced in September 2011 and closed on 27 September 2012, Canal+ Group complements its pay-TV business with a stronger position in free television in France.
Canal+ Group has expanded its international activities via its subsidiaries Canal+Overseas, the first French-speaking Pay TV operator in the French overseas territories and departments. It is also the leading Pay TV operator in French-speaking Africa, present in 30 countries of Central and West Africa and Madagascar. Canal+ Group is a major player in pay television in Poland where it announced development projects which should be finalised by the end of 2012. It is also present in Vietnam with a package of satellite channels operating under the name K+.
Studiocanal is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Canal+ Group. It is a major player in Europe in film co-production, acquisition and distribution. It operates directly in the three main European territories: France, the United Kingdom and Germany. Every year, approximately 50 films are distributed over the entire operating chain (in theatres, on video, television and video-on-demand). Studiocanal is also one of the world’s leaders in international film sales. It owns one of the largest catalogs in the world, with more than 5,000 titles.
In 2012, Canal+ Group had revenues of €5,013 million and an EBITA of €663 million including the impact of the integration of the new activities in Poland and of D8 and D17.
It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Vivendi.
