Universal Music Group
Brahms’ Piano Concertos

World-famous pianist Hélène Grimaud has returned to her first loves and recorded Brahms’ Piano Concertos No. 1 and No. 2. No. 1 is “life and existence, literally,” while No. 2 conveys “a kind of nostalgia that is also full of bittersweet tenderness.” After recording Concerto No. 1, she needed some 15 years to prepare to attack Concerto No. 2. This long process can be explained by the particularly close bond she has with Concerto No. 1: it was the first work by Brahms that she had ever heard, and she still has a profound attachment to it. Concerto No. 1 was recorded with the Bavarian Radio Symphonic Orchestra, and Concerto No. 2 with the prestigious Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the first time that Grimaud has recorded with the latter. Two orchestras, but a single conductor: Andris Nelsons, whom the pianist greatly admires.
