Studiocanal signed multi-year subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) feature film distribution agreements with two Chinese operators. It is the first time that such rights are being dealt with directly by Studiocanal in China, reflecting the company’s intention to develop business in a market identified as strategic.

Video platform Youku.com acquired SVOD right to over 50 library classics such as About A Boy, Attack The Block, Chaplin, Gouttes d’eau sur pierres brûlantes, Je vais bien, Ne t’en fais pas, Mulholland Dr., The Pianist and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Studiocanal also signed a deal with BesTV New Media, a subsidiary of Shanghai Media Group, for several dozen titles from the Studiocanal library soon available in SVOD in China to some 20 million subscribers.

Explains Matthieu Gondinet, Senior Vice President, International TV and Library Distribution at Studiocanal, “our company has initiated a series of actions to implement and develop itself in China. The Chinese government has made important efforts to fight against piracy and encourage the development of legal distribution platforms in the country.”
